This species is found in the Southeast United States especially in coastal regions.

The small sapwood band is nearly white, contrasting strongly with the heartwood which can be light yellow, a yellowish brown to dark reddish brown. It is a strong wood with a grain that varies from straight to even and the wood is coarse textured. Cypress has outstanding durability and decay resistance. For this reason it is often used in exterior applications including boat building.
