The species can be found in most of North America, from Canada to Florida and as far west as New

Mexico. As many as five varieties of Black cherry are reported to be known.

The heartwood color ranges from reddish brown to deep red, or light reddish brown, usually with brown flecks and some gum pockets. The grain is fine but may have wavy streaks which make it striking to behold.

Cherry has a strong resemblance to true Mahogany which is why it is often referred to as New England Mahogany
